SFGate writes, Supervisor Chris Daly's name is the new four-letter word in 3 supervisor contests.

Daly's at it again, trying to stack the board with his hand-picked cronies. A vote for them is a vote for him and his antics like his resolutions to ban the Junior ROTC and the Blue Angels which have helped him to become the least-popular politician citywide.

The San Francisco Association of Realtors is paying for robocalls in Districts One, Three and Eleven comparing some of the candidates to Daly.

The San Francisco Homeowners Council, a political committee affiliated with the Realtors' group says:

"David Chiu is the handpicked candidate of far-out Supervisor Chris Daly and his radical, ineffective faction on the Board of Supervisors -like Daly's antics, you will love Chiu."
In addition to David Chiu, campaign mailers and television commercials are targeting Daly's "puppets" Eric Mar in Disctrict One and Daly's former aide John Avalos in District Eleven.

Anyone associated with D-a-l-y is a four-letter word. I can't wait to vote him out of office!

Mayor Gavin Newsom unveiled his economic stimulus plan this week revealing a flaccid response to very recent economic woes.

1. Payments from state and federal governments to S.F. are down

2. Property transfer tax revenue is down. From $6.7 billion (gross sales, not the revenue from the transfer tax) in calendar 2007 to just slightly over $1 billion for the first 8.5 months of 2008.

3. SF will be affected by the general macroeconomic slowdown.

4. Retail sales are down in S.F.

5. Business tax revenue will go down.

6. The newly strengthened dollar will hurt S.F., like reduced tourism for example.

The most recent economic data released by the Controller's Office shows the city's unemployment rate was at 5.9 percent in August; a year ago it was at 4.6 percent. Still, the state's unemployment rate, for example, was 7.7 percent in August.

Greenwashing To The Governor's Mansion

Saadia Malik of the San Francisco Bay Guardian [SFBG] takes a look at Gavin Newsom's newest green initiatives:

GREEN CITY Mayor Gavin Newsom has made a high profile push for several new green initiatives in recent weeks, a concerted political move that comes just as he and his political team are aggressively working to subvert a city ballot measure that would make far bigger gains in combating climate change and greening the city's energy portfolio than anything he's proposing.

Julian Davis, campaign manager for Proposition H, the Clean Energy Act, told the Guardian:
"San Franciscans should be ashamed that they have a mayor who is greenwashing and gay washing his way to the governor's mansion."
Newsom opposes Proposition H, which would direct the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to figure out how to provide clean and renewable energy to the city, and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. has hired Newsom's chief political strategist, Eric Jaye, to lead the multimillion dollar campaign to defeat the measure.

Davis said the steady stream of green initiatives from the Mayor's Office are simply a means to make up for the mayor's severe deficiency in environmental credibility.

Schwarzenegger In Total Recall

According to SacBee.com, a "powerful and well-heeled" correctional officers' union is petitioning for the recall of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The union needs over $1 million to cull the 1,041,530 signatures to qualify a recall for the ballot.

This comes one the 70th day of the 2008-09 fiscal year that California has been without a budget, the longest standoff in California history. If you recall, CA voters "recalled ex-Gov. Gray Davis one year after the second-longest budget impasse, the 2002 budget."

Lance Corcoran, spokesperson of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, says the reason for the recall is, “In the history of bad governors, this is the worst governor we've ever had." He went on to say:

This is a man who is a poser. That's what he did, that's how he made his living, posing.

Corcoran said the "straw that broke the camel's back" was the governor's executive order this summer to temporarily slash the pay of state workers to the federal minimum wage. The governor did so to conserve cash during the budget impasse.

While some state workers, including the public safety officers of the California Highway Patrol, were exempted en masse, the employees of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation were not.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will host a free indie-rock concert in Denver during convention.

Critically aware of what the young adult vote means to his base as he considers a run for governor in 2010, Newsom will sponsor honoring Young Democrats of America event in Denver during the Democratic National Convention.

It will feature an all-star line-up including Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids, Silversun Pickups, Nada Surf, DJ Z-Trip and members of Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley and She and Him, as well as a special appearance by comedienne and actress Sarah Silverman and other surprise guests.

I stumbled across an interesting post on C.W. Nevius Blog, asserting Gavin Newsom is still rankled by Barack Obama snub dating back to 2004.

Allegedly, when Gavin Newsom was the poster boy for gay-friendly straight men everywhere, did Barack Obama shy away from having his picture taken with the San Francisco mayor?

Newsom insiders say yes; Obama insiders call the claim "ridiculous."

Perhaps, that is why Newsom supported Hillary Clinton? There are some who think this story was a calculated move to drive gay voters to Hillary. And there are others, like former SF mayor Willie Brown, who see good reason why Obama, then running for U.S. Senate, might've have shied away from connecting himself with gay marriage back at a time when the idea was see nas much more "radical" than it is today.

San Francisco Sells Sanctuary: Bill O'Reilly

The man charged with killing a father and two sons on a San Francisco street last month was one of the youths who benefited from the city's long-standing practice of shielding illegal immigrant juveniles who committed felonies from possible deportation.

Edwin Ramos, now 21, is being held on three counts of murder in the June 22 deaths of Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16. They were shot near their home in the Excelsior district when Tony Bologna, driving home from a family picnic, briefly blocked the gunman's car from completing a left turn down a narrow street.

Ramos had been in trouble before. In 2003, when he was 17, he was found guilty of attempted robbery and assaulting a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority passenger. Last March, he was detained for several days after police found a gun used in a double homicide in the car he was driving. And then came June 22, when Anthony Bologna's car prevented Ramos from turning left at an intersection. San Francisco police say Ramos opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle, killing Bologna and his two sons, Michael and Matthew, who were driving home from a family barbecue.

Ramos is a native of El Salvador. He is an undocumented immigrant and an alleged member of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, also known as MS-13. And despite his previous scrapes with the law and his juvenile felony convictions, Ramos has never been deported - a fact that has put him at the center of a debate over San Francisco's so-called "sanctuary law".

The triple homicide has prompted conservative commentators including Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Lou Dobbs to weigh in - O'Reilly called the city of San Francisco "completely out of control and now directly responsible for the murders of three men."

Mayor Gavin Newsom took a little breather from busy job as a Crime Fighter and one giant step towards a Political Makeover to advance his Gav4Gov ambitions, marring actress Jennifer Siebel on Saturday at Siebel's parents' Montana Ranch.

It is the 34-year-old Siebel's first marriage and the second for Newsom, who divorced legal analyst Kimberly Guilfoyle in March 2006.

Newsom met Siebel in October 2006 and they have been together ever since. Siebel was at Newsom's side when he was sworn in for his second term as mayor in January. She also stood by him after he publicly admitted to having had an affair with a staff member's wife and a drinking problem.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Montana to attend the wedding as did other friends and family. Conspiculously, Senator Dianne Feinstein was not invited.

Newsom Back Behind Bars

Nope, not San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's favorite watering hole, Plumpjack and Balboa Cafe owned by Newsom and former socialite pal, Billy Getty.

Rather, an unusual jailhouse visit to obtain access codes to the city's computer network.

City engineer Terry Childs had been accused of withholding the access codes and has been jailed since July 13 on felony counts. Prosecutors said he was trying to block access to a vital city network.

A team of code crackers brought in from Cisco Systems had been working around the clock to try to decipher Childs' codes, but with only marginal success.

Then, Childs' lawyer, Erin Crane, called the mayor's office Monday afternoon, offering a jailhouse meeting.

"It wasn't cheap and I just couldn't see us keep spending that kind of money"

Without hesitation, the mayor acted to pay a secret visit to the jail and waled away with the codes. He was there inside of thirty minutes.

Do not contact City Attorney, Kamila Harris.
Do not contact Chief of Police, Heather Fong.
Do pass go and collect the code!

The lawyer says Childs had been the victim of a plot to force him out of his job.I admire both Child's enginuity born of his necessity, not compunction, to leverage his hand to win an audiance with the mayor, attempting to navagate through the murky judicial system as well as Newsom's willingness to quickly grant it on the City's behalf - saving taxpayers money!

This is just another reason why Gavin Newsom does NOT suck indeed!

With Barack Obama running as the Democratic nominee, Nader and company will be hard-pressed to reach Green Party activists/pacifists.

Too bad, Republican hopeful and genuine Independent candidate, John McCain won't benefit by the hippy vote as George W. Bush did before him.

But wait! Act now, and you also get Matt Gonzalez. How do we do it?

Substraction by addition!

Bottom of the barrel for Bottom of the ticket, Matt Gonazlez too weak to run against Gavin Newsom, wants to be a heartbeat away from leader of the free world. Are ya insane?

Gonzo's the Major League equivalent of a AAA washout scratching his initials into an All-Star ballot.

Bush league! This is a National Election, not the Lottery. If ya really care about the environment, stop wasting our time, dime and littering the streets with your worthless signs.

Han Shin, the man accused last year of stalking Mayor Gavin Newsom and trying to run over his ex-boyfriend's roommate, found himself in trouble again this week after he allegedly rammed his car into the driver of another vehicle following a traffic accident. It is the second time in 18 months that Shin has been accused of trying to run someone over.

The latest incident occurred around noon Wednesday, July 9 at the intersection of 9th and Harrison streets. Police arrested Shin, 43, who was wearing sandals, yellow shorts cut above the knee, and a yellow and black patterned silk collared shirt - so sorry to say, no purple latex gloves. He was charged with aggravated assault with an automobile weapon. As of Friday, Shin remained in San Francisco County jail.

According to police, Shin and another driver were involved in a traffic accident after which Shin allegedly drove his Toyota Corolla LE into the other driver.

"There was some type of prior contact between the two. When the victim stopped at the traffic light, the suspect drove into the victim's vehicle intentionally," said police spokesman Sergeant Neville Gittens.
"then the suspect intentionally ran into the other person."
According to eyewitness accounts, soon after the accident Shin walked toward the Bay Area Reporter (B.A.R.) offices on 9th Street. Another driver warned him that he was leaving the scene of an accident. A B.A.R. staffer was later told that he'd hit both vehicles and had asked,
"Where's the Bay Area Reporter?"
According to the staff member, Shin entered the office whimpering and carrying large, rolled up pieces of paper, folders, and a bag loaded with more papers.

Not knowing about the accident, staff asked if there was something wrong, and if he wanted them to call police. Shin replied:
"I'm afraid of the police."
That's when staff members recognized him and one staffer told Shin he remembered him as the person who was found in Mayor Newsom's apartment building.

Shin adopted a somber, serious tone and asked, "What do you know about it?" After that, he started babbling incoherently.

When Shin started to open a small gate that leads past the B.A.R. 's front desk, as if he wanted to come back and talk to staff, he was told, "Just leave, just get out."

Shin got huffy, grabbed his things, and as he turned to leave yelled back:
"Fucking fags!"
Back outside, Shin, who'd been screaming during much of the accident's aftermath – at one point, a police officer tugged on his shirt in an apparent attempt to get him to calm down – eventually appeared to be in better spirits.

As he stood outside the Vagabond Inn, which is next door to the B.A.R., he raised his hands in the air, shimmied, and sang part of the Brenda Lee classic "I'm Sorry." Shin also rambled, invoking the names of Madonna and Benjamin Franklin as an officer stood a few feet across from him.

Shin, a new age author and beauty contestant organizer, didn't resist as police handcuffed him moments later and led him away.

In February 2007, Shin was caught trying to break into Newsom's Pacific Heights apartment building and was charged with stalking the debonair politician. He reportedly had been seen photographing the mayor below the waist at a public event and aggressively grabbed Newsom.

Shin denied the charges, but a San Francisco Superior Court commissioner issued a three-year restraining order against Shin, ordering him to stay at least 100 yards from Newsom.

Later that month Shin faced numerous charges in Contra Costa County, including one count of first-degree residential burglary, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count felony vandalism stemming from a February 28 incident in San Ramon.

Prosecutors alleged that Shin went to the home of his former lover to confront him, but when the man wasn't at home, Shin allegedly barged into the residence, took some money and a photograph of the former boyfriend and left. The man's roommate followed Shin outside, according to police, and Shin allegedly tried to run him over three times with his car.

Is my mask of sanity slipping or is San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom bearing a strikingly handsome resemblance to one of modern Hollywood’s elite cult figures - actor Christian Bale?

Bale’s most acclaimed roles are lead in Batman Begins and serial killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

Suddenly and for no apparent reason, author of the controversial novel Bret Easton Ellis, begins with the lead character, Patrick Batman, stabbing a homeless man.

Spontaneous Degeneration or Careful Contemplation Evolving, Disolving Inside Out like the Spontaneous Slip of The Stranger's Neck Upon a Knife (Albert Camus) or Perhaps, a Platonic Pull pushing Ellis into Eddy in the Withering Streets of The Tenderloin Heights?

Not unlike the Newsome administration, Ellis constructed the work with no way to understand the Killer's motives, making it even more frightening. From here, the body count grows to include prositutes, gays, girlfriends and children.

And, I'm hoping he'll do the same with the Mayor’s purple latex glove wearing Valentine's Day stalker, Han Shin, in a sequel!

Meantime, Christian Bale rightfully rehearses his lines to an acceptance speech on the not so distant horizon and Newsom readys himself for some punches below the equator as he prepares to follow Actor-Turned-Politician and mentor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, for what will be his first contest since his victory over Matt Gonzalez in 2003 mayorial race - Gav4Gov.com.

Pictured on the left is, Pat Riley, now 23-years older than San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and widely regarded as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all time. Riley has served as the head coach of five championship teams and an assistant coach to another.

Of course, Newsom’s first term was won in 2003, so his best ball is on the horizon. Thus far, he’s grazed on necessary; yet, low-hanging political fruit like, Same-Sex Marriage, Greenery and Scenery not to mention attempting to add WiFi.

He’s also tried to tackle controversial social issues such as Community Court, Care-Not-Cash and Services or Citation as well as challenge America’s War On Drugs warehousing America.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will soon be stepping down from a bigger office far outside The City limits and considerably more conservative.

If Gavin hopes to fill it, he won't be unopposed. He’ll have to at least defeat Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa.

And, what’s next for Matt Gonzalez and Attorney General and former Governor Jerry Brown Oval Office?

After conferring with the Coalition On Homelessness as well as Community and Business leaders, Mayor Gavin Newsom withdrew his veto to allow legislation unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors in which San Francisco will begin busing homeless to Marin County.

Strangely, the controversial Busing Resolution was a jointly introduced by the unlikely alliance of Liberal Lefty District 6 Supervisor, Chris Daly, and Nouveau Conservative District 8 Supervisor, Bevan Duffy.

Daly’s district includes the Tenderloin, an area with a huge concentration of liquor stores and one of the worst chronic drugs and alcohol problem in the nation, while Bevan Duffy’s District 8, includes the Castro, a predominantly gay neighborhood, and attributes its increasingly conservative vote to its sky rocketing real estate prices.

Like a bad ‘80s John Hughes movie (redundant), Daly and Duffy, two warring Supes from different sides of the track bury one hatchet to bury another in the back of a mutual enemy: Poverty/Prosperity.

Okay. Let's say, they agree on the same antidote not the same poison.

Daly wants to help his homeless constituants, who earn an average $5.00 dollars a day, panhandling to the Tenderloin's overcrowded, depressed economy, to reach more affluent neighborhoods across the bay:

“Just because one does not have a home in the Tenderloin, shouldn’t prevent them from not having a home in Marin County too.”

... While Duffy wants to serve taxpayers by helping the ambitious few who stumbled upon the Castro to find their way out.

Regardless, San Francisco's Odd Couple lauded an independent study reporting panhandlers in Marin County earn nearly four-times as much, averaging $19.75 per day. Moreover, Marin County environmentalist advocate busing, arguing homelessness represents a positive, critical externality to the eco-system, long since missing in Marin.

Meantime, liquor store owners remain cautiously optimistic opting for a "wait-and-see" approach to the homeless free trade agreement - hoping their customers will return home with full pockets and empty bellies.

Having sold liquor to the Tenderloin's homeless for generations, the majority of shop owners, already live in Marin, and would be happy set up shop closer to home.

Mayhill Fowler of the Huffington Post writes of a couple of philanderers in Hillary Clinton’s life, screwing her over – Her husband, Bill, and his protégé, Gavin Newsom.

March 10, 2008

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is one of the prettiest but alas not one of the sharpest in the Democratic pencil box. Chatting with local pundit Phil Matier, in less than two minutes on the early morning news Mayor Newsom confirms the Clinton game plan for winning the Democratic presidential nomination. "It's a very subjective thing--intelligence analysis. You can go either way," Newsom informs Matier. Since when does a city mayor know anything about national intelligence analysis? For that matter, how much do mere senators know?

The only person currently engaged in Election 2008 who can speak authoritatively on this subject is Bill Clinton. Just returned from junketing with the former President around Texas, Gavin is parroting Bill, who clearly had a good time holding forth in the back of that black Texas SUV.

"She [Hillary] is the best to go one-on-one against John McCain on the only issue that could stop us in November," Newsom says, "and that's the issue of national security."

"Do you think that's what will win the cup?" Matier asks.

Apparently, personal scandals are not an issue in Newsom's mind. It's all about leadership. "Do you think for a second the Bush Administration will take all that objective data and hesitate to manipulate it in the context of this campaign?" Newsom rejoins. Trust me--this reasoning is way too Machiavellian for the Mayor. But the Clintons? They anticipate a trumped-up terrorist scare? Or a manufactured overseas crisis that calls to John McCain's specific expertise?

"It's a very subjective thing--intelligence analysis. You can go either way. And McCain will do everything to focus attention on every little thing that's happening in Israel, North Korea or Pakistan or wherever else in the world. . . . They will play on fear. We know that fear works."

Indeed. The Clintons know. And what a national election they are crafting! McCain the fearmaster versus Clinton the fearmonger. Wait a minute. Isn't this allowing McCain and the Republicans to set the agenda for the election? Or is national security the issue--not the economy, not health care, not education--that Hillary Clinton is most looking forward to delving?

Before she plants that commander-in-chief standard, however, Clinton, like Obama, needs to hone her skill set. It was clear in the last debate, for example, that neither senator knew anything about Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev--not even the basic facts at Tim Russert's command. Clinton couldn't quite get his name, much less pronounce it. While she's mastering all things Russian, she'd better add Kazakhstan. Linking Bill Clinton to the venal Nursultan Nazarbayev could help McCain enough, without any Machiavellianism. Fear may not be needed if Bill Clinton has been engaging abroad in the kind of questionable deal-making that once got him in so much trouble at home.

With all the credibility of former Major League Baseball player, Jose Conseco's Rampant 'Roids tell all book, "Juiced", Slick Willie's written attacks of his successor as mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, of racism in appointments, are biased, unbased and solely motivated by the color of money.

Today’s City Hall reflects the best and brightest faces of The City – period. On the contrary, I'd imagine a white male mayor would be tempted to leverage minority faces, whether it is sex, race or religion, for political gain.

MLK's dream is promotion by merit. Add to that equation of equality the law of averages (over time) and City Hall's portrait should bare a picture perfect pallet proportionate to its population.

Willie contends:

"When I was mayor of San Francisco I made a point to appoint as many qualified blacks as I could to city posts. Now when I walk around city hall, I see almost no black faces. When I left, blacks were ousted along with me."

I’m too far away and know too few details about any one of Newsom’s appointees to either defend his selections case by case or cast any speculation.

Yet, from where I'm sitting, looking at a City Hall's diverse complexion in the reflection staring back at me, I'd have to dissagree. There are just too many high profile minority appointees like Police Chief Heather Fong that come to mind for Willie's words to ring true; and it were, then wouldn't this be an indictment of his former administration, not Newsom's?

Confirming, Willie, not Newsom, appointed with Race in mind.

The current building boom that is taking place in SF Central City area at this very moment will add several thousands of new dwellings to the service area of Fire Station 3 -- already the busiest in the nation*.

Due to the development and the practice of dispatching a fire truck and an ambulance on every medical call (near 100,000 annually), a significant increase in the already hourly around-the-clock noise from 140-decibel air horns and sirens is to be expected unless effective measures are put in place by the SF Fire Department to reduce the noise.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom continues to shake things up, ordering police investigators to put on uniforms and patrol streets at night to help combat the city's escalating violence.

Police officials say an unspecified number of officers from the department's narcotics and gang task force units have been reassigned to beef up patrol units in high crime areas.

The move comes after San Francisco reported 98 homicides last year, the most in a dozen years. Six people have been killed in the city so far this year.

A spokesman for the mayor says, Gavin’s upset with the homicide rate and wants more done to reduce violent crime.

The American businessman-politician has a long and storied history which brings us to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

This forthright billionaire just may have the right combination of managerial, risk-taking, and political skills to create a new model for public service and new model – starting with restructuring his office itself.

Bloomberg’s bullpen-style office concept in city government was made famous during his 2002 State of the City address, saying that it was created to “improve efficiency” and foster creativity. The idea comes from the stock-market trading-floor layout in which everyone works together in one big room.

Today, San Francisco’s reinvigorated Mayor Gavin Newsom is developing a bullpen plan in which to arrange cubicles in Room 201 — which is currently used for occasional meetings — In addition to better exchanging of ideas through improved proximity in the bullpen, the mayor and his staff plan to actually conduct their business there.

Typically, it’s Local “Loco” Liberal and Resident Nancy Boy, Brock of SFist, whose is too blinded by his love to hate the incumbent mayor (and moderate) to embrace the very progressive (and proven) ideas, he espouses.

And now, it looks like Brock’s liberal leanings have tipped the scales at SFist such that to include fellow blogger Jon in his (left) brainwashing.

Check out Jon’s shortsighted, short-fused reaction likening Gavin’s trading spaces to a “Battlestar Galactica” shake up - it’s the journalistic equivelent to getting cut-off by a Toyota Prius with a whirled peas bumper sticker.

Borrowing ideas from other mayors is nothing new or unusual for Newsom. In the summer of 2005, Newsom toured Chicago with Mayor Richard Daley and touted that city’s use of surveillance cameras — which has now been initiated in San Francisco — to combat crime.

Additionally, the Mayor modeled:

The City’s SF Stat program — which tracks and reports how well city departments are performing — on Baltimore’s CitiStat.

The City’s Community Courts — which will process Quality of Life crimes — on Manhattan’s Community Courts.

The City’s 311 24-Hour Hotline — which routes non-emergency city service calls — in the last decade the following cities have adopted a three-digit system: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Dallas and Minneapolis.

The post also criticizes Newsom for giving raises and new job titles to worthy staff members. I say you get what you pay for. If you want to turn your football team around, hire Bill Parcels.

Newsom’s Press Secretary, Nathan Ballard, says that all these people are proven professionals, possessing the necessary skill set and experience to help the city and are within budget.

Newsom's work has become prominent on the indie rock scene, and her profile has risen, in part due to a number of live shows and appearances on The Jimmy Kimmel Show on ABC.

Both Newsom's harp playing and vocal style are unconventional… and so is she.

Actually, The city of San Francisco has ordered a Scientology group to stop using a picture of Mayor Gavin Newsom on its promotional materials, heartily endorsing founder L. Ron Hubbard's writings.

A group called the Way to Happiness Foundation International sent a box full of booklets to Newsom's City Hall office describing some of Scientology's core principles.

The pamphlets came emblazoned with the seal of the city of San Francisco and featured a picture of a smiling Newsom with a fictitious letter from him.

Yep. San Francisco’s Hello/Goodbye Mayor, Gavin Newsom, said Aloha to his girlfriend (and the ladies) when he proposed during his vacation to actress Jennifer Siebel.

It will be Siebel's first marriage and the second for Newsom, whose four-year marriage to legal analyst Kimberly Guilfoyle ended in divorce in March 2006 (Guilfoyle hosts "The Line Up" and serves as a legal analyst for FOX News).

Siebel, who lives in Los Angeles, began dating Newsom prior to his public admission to having an affair with his campaign manager's wife and a drinking problem.

A Marin County native and Stanford University graduate, Siebel, 33, currently has a recurring guest spot on the NBC police drama "Life." She also appears in the film “In the Valley of Elah” (2007), an Iraq War drama costarring Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron.

In an interview published in the Nob Hill Gazette in November, Siebel was asked if she and Newsom ever discussed about what life would be like if she were married to the mayor.

"People do mention the 'first lady' thing to me and it makes me sort of shy. But yes, we've talked about it. And joked about it, too. We both care about creating a normal, balanced life that includes family."

I’m thinkin’ that Newsom’s doomed to a brood of adorable little girls, like Casey at bat, ultimately breaking his heart when his daughter dates the captain of the chess team – Chris Daly’s son!

About Me. About Gavin. About-Face.

With Gavin Newsom newly re-elected by a landslide margin of 77%, I thought it responsible to re-write my About Page or if you will oblige me - an About-face Page.

I bought the (Gavin Newsom Sucks.com) domain name over a few beers with a couple of buds – a sort of cyber squatting goof. Unfortunataly, both The Donald’s and gal-pal Rosie O’Donnell’s were taken, probably by each other – so, I bought Gavin’s.

There it sat dormant over a few more months… a few more beers with a couple more buds, until awakened by the City Hall Sex Scandal. At which time, I launched the following message:

Entertaining - Yes. Productive - No!

"I like boozing, schmoozing losers winning (and womanizing) as much as the next guy. But, when I’m not watching nighttime dramas, I’m busy watching my city’s homelessness and violence grow – two issues that Gavin campaigned upon and have steadily worsened since his ascendancy."

"Newsom’s ‘poor decisions’ affect us all. I’m not political and don’t claim to have any answers. I only know I don’t want to see Gavin win another election."

Ironically, I recognize Gavin’s short comings in within myself to the point I love and laugh more than most at his never-ending girls and gaffes. I’d say Brittanie Mountz is still my favorite... I can identify with Gavin's temporary insanity - She's got legs that go to go to heaven; I especially like her MySpace photo.

I mean Gavin Sucks, but Chris Daly Blows.com! With the help of Mirkarimi and Gonzalez, he proved it - putting together the biggest Regressives Convention since the Nixon Administration and the biggest salad-eating fiasco producing zero candidates.

With Gavin showing 78% approval ratings, they were wise to fold before they flopped!

But, Old Man Lumpy wasn’t finished – Not yet! If San Francisco's voters won’t listen, then he’ll just have to scare that pesky Gavin out of City Hall. So, he summoned the Ghost of McCarthy to huff, puff and bluff public humiliation announcements from Croneyism to Cocaine… save none could sink Gavin and the Gang.

Busted - Can't touch this teflon doo. What you say bounces off of me and sticks to you!

Daly's which hunt bit him in the ass and bought him a tongue lashing and demotion in swift order - Bravo Peskin!

Stealing a scene from Michael Moore’s Flip-Flop, I followed with an About-face, realizing Gavin’s the only candidate with the necessary political clout within the City and more importantly the potential beyond to successfully clean up our streets today.

In other words, Gavin is just four years away from a bigger office far outside the City limits with a constituency infinitely more conservative. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Same-Sex Marriages, but it doesn't ring with the same cache down South. Gavin’s capital here is essentially confederate money there.

If he’s to compete against credible candidates, he’ll have to tip this exchange rate in his favor with a compelling story that scales ala:

Rudy Giuliani’s 911 and crime fighting fetes – from bankrupt to boomtown!

Today’s “Services or Citation” program is veneer-thin. If Newsom wants to give it some teeth, he'll have put an end to the revolving door that exists violent inmates and drug addicts back onto out streets, then he needs to put his pearly whites and blue tie to work selling to the public, politicking private business and pressuring Old School Progressives within for a real, lasting institutional change and sustaining investment.

Remember, there’s no such thing as a bad crack addict, theif or rapist, just bad elected officials.

Quantify the cost of the status quo, ranging from Quality-of-Life to Life itself. Call it the “Price of Life” initiative and sell it against the cost of police, social services, etc!

This is no revelation to the Newsom camp. They they know what’s at stake in four years and need your help to do right now, right here – write him!

Relax. Gavin Newsom has a clean bill of health, but City doctors say San Francisco's sidewalks are terminal.

There's too many obstilces to hazard walking in the City.

Case in point, the Flor de Lys, a French restaurant located nearby hustling Union Square, erected two huge cement planters in front of the building to bookend a red carpet that rolls enormous fanfare from the doorstep to curb perpendicular to the many who walk as to greet the few who don't.

While this would be welcome in Bellaire, Scottsdale or Palm Springs, it's obsticle here. These walkways are our lifelines delivering art students, downtown professionals, tourist, shoppers to galleries, theatres, etc.

Since when did merchants like the Flor de Lys own the sidewalk? This is not beautifiation, this is dirty business. This is obstruction. We need some mayoral angioplasty to step up and unclog our thoroughfares of this fatty French cuisine. I mean, if a minivan turned sideways on a commuter lane we’d call the National Guard, right?
Imagine a tree planted in driveway of your suburban home?

Please take a stroll to 777 Sutter Street between Taylor and Jones. Stop and gawk at the beautiful bottleneck. If you can't take the risk, we understand. Close your eyes and give me space as I back up and replay the scene... I SAID, I NEED ROOM PEOPLE... back it up! Ahhhhh, that's it - Merci Bucu!

Add a valet stand on your right and Grandma waltzing her walker like a hit and run es-car-got - viola! You’ve got yourself one Rude, French Clusterfuck!

I called Gavin’s 311, which I applaud; and hopefully the wheels are in motion, but I'm tired of playing hall monitor. There’s got to be a budget and personnel designated to proactively police our sidewalks.

Every time I turn on my television, I’ve some washed up actor like David Schwimmer lecturing me about Clean Air and Green Living; yet, how can I get to the Market & Powell MUNI/BART mall, without having to slalom through the outstretched arms of homeless zombies plus the litany of signs, podiums, plants and tables littered around bus stops, mailboxes, newspaper stands, etc.

If these greedy merchants can’t exercise some common sense and restraint, then someone on Gavin’s team should. I know a homeless solution is expensive, but a Sidewalk Czar shoud be relatively cheap, eh?

Miscellaneous:

Why does spend dough to create an eyesore with a huge sign the reads, Intercity Home, on the side of a building on the 100 Block of 6th Street? I see it everyday returning to the City from the 101 – stupid!

Why does the abandoned building across the street with all the furniture bolted to the exterior walls have graffiti paintings of huge nipples?

Newsom Inspects Oil Spill

Gavin Newsom got his hands dirty today inspecting the 58,000 gallons of oil that spilled into the bay after a container ship rammed into the Bay Bridge. The mayor plans to take legal action against the responsible company or agency and is equally concerned over incorrect information from the Coast Guard about the extent of the spill.

Oil began leaking into the bay after the 65,131-ton Cosco Busan, an 810-foot-long container ship, crashed into the base of a tower of the Bay Bridge's western span in heavy fog at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Until 9 p.m. Wednesday, the Coast Guard said only 140 gallons had spilled from the vessel. Coast Guard officials said that estimate came from the ship's owners and that the Coast Guard only realized the spill was much greater after it conducted its own inspection of the bay.

"When you're off by 58,000 gallons that's a big gap. This is not acceptable. This wasn't in the margin of error."

The damage to city property is still being assessed, and local officials said they are working with federal and regional authorities on the cleanup.

"I'm not saying anyone lied. I'm saying there was wrong information. It all goes to intent. Was there intent to mislead? That needs to be assessed. There's a lot of finger pointing right now....I'm just concerned about mitigating the damage and cleaning it up and then holding those people responsible."

U.S. Coast Guard Capt. William Uberti has said the initial cleanup response was appropriate, but city officials said today that had they known the spill was 58,000 early on, they would have laid down more boom lines and responded to the event with more urgency.

The City's political analysts are predicting a record-low voter turnout in a mayoral election with incumbent Gavin Newsom running virtually unopposed for a second term.

This year, Left-wing critics like Superviser Chris Daly held a convention where they failed to nominate a challenger, so Newsom's challengers include a motley crew that includes a sex club owner, a homeless taxi driver and a nudist rights advocate, a clown, a video blogger and a chicken.

Newsom's job approval rating rose to 78% when San Francisco began performing gay marriages shortly after he took office and have hovered there since -even after he publicly admitted to a drinking problem and having an affair with a close aide's wife.

Despite the city's unflagging homelessness problem and a rising homicide rate, the mayor's poll numbers indicate San Franciscans are largely satisfied with the status quo, analysts said.

In the election's other marquee races, the Sheriff Sheriff Michael Hennessey also has no serious challengers, and District Attorney Kamala Harris is running unopposed. Out of 11 ballot propositions, only two competing measures to expand or restrict parking in the city have generated any passion.

Mentally Ill, Homeless Bad Signs Ahead

CW Nevius reports a female police officer was attacked by a mentally ill homeless man known as the "the Sign Guy," described as a disheveled, shirtless street person who had been camped out at the edge of Justin Herman Plaza for months.

"Rick," as he was known in the area, wrote oddball phrases on his bare chest and festooned the trees in front of the shops with cardboard placards with outlandish messages. Some of the signs were gibberish and some, like the message below make pedestrians nervous.

"No talking! Just give me money."

Onlookers said at first when the officer approached, the man appeared to be mellow and cooperative. But, without warning, when he reached down to get something from his bag, he came up swinging.

Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Mannina says:

"He struck her in the face. She fell, and he got on top of her and continued to strike her."

Luckily, a passer-by jumped in and pulled the man off. More police arrived and arrested Richard Jaworski, 44, who had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court. In fact, he'd recently been in jail for a six-month sentence after an incident in January. His crime that time? Punching a police officer.

While Old school Progressives would have you question our right to challenge the rights of the mentally ill street people, New School Liberals offer a solution – Laura’s Law.

Three years ago, Gov. Gray Davis signed landmark legislation to help ensure outpatient treatment for seriously mentally ill people who pose a danger to themselves or others.

Assembly Bill 1421 became known as "Laura's Law," after Laura Wilcox, a 19-year-old college student from Nevada County who was among three people shot to death on Jan. 10, 2001, by 41-year-old Scott Harlan Thorpe. He was suffering from delusional paranoia and was convinced the FBI was trying to poison his food. Thorpe had resisted his family's efforts to get him into treatment.

Wilcox, a sophomore at Haverford College, was working as a receptionist at Nevada City's public mental-health clinic during her Christmas break when Thorpe's paranoia turned homicidal. That tragedy helped prompt California legislators to finally take steps toward updating laws that had made it virtually impossible to force dangerously mental ill people into a structured outpatient treatment.

Regrettably, Laura's Law has not been given a fair chance to work.

One of the provisions of the bill, the subject of years of contention in the state Capitol, left it to the counties to see that the law was carried out. It also gave them a giant escape clause to avoid the issue in lean times: Under AB1421, a county must certify that it has not implemented Laura's Law at the expense of any voluntary mental-health services.

Not surprisingly, an overwhelming majority of counties have not been able to summon the money or political will to carry out the author's vision of a structured system to compel seriously mentally ill people -- after consultation with their families and medical professionals, and with court approval -- to take the medications their very condition may prevent them from knowing they need.

One notable exception is Los Angeles County, where a pilot program has helped steer patients -- many of them homeless -- into supervised outpatient treatment programs.

Asked why San Francisco has yet to act on Laura's Law, especially in view of the relation between untreated mental illness and homelessness, Mayor Gavin Newsom acknowledged that he "dropped the ball on that" amid fiscal stresses and other pressing matters. But Newsom added that it was "something I was committed to early on" and he vowed to make its implementation a City Hall priority.

Apparently, daily commuters from the ferry felt uneasy about having to walk through a gantlet of signs each morning and evening. Regulars in the area expressed an increasing anxiety over the last two weeks and a longtime tabletop jewelry salesman in the plaza Sign-Guy said the Sign Guy’s behavior was “getting really crazy."

Can anything be done?

Yes, Gavin Newsom needs to overcome the obvious "institutional resistance" challenge specific to San Francisco as well as Anytown's obsticle - money! He can start by challenging the politics-as-usual culture through educational campaigns targeting the public and cloakroom politicking private business.

Quantify the cost of the status quo, ranging from quality-of-life to life itself. Put a price tag on it and sell police, social services, etc!

The time to write your mayor is now. You want Clean, Safe sidewalks and he needs political equity that can scale over four years to win a bigger office far outside The City limits and infinitely more conservative.

In other words, Gavin's 78% approval ratings here are worthless there. Believe me, the exchange rate for "Same Sex Marriages' alone could leae him bankrupt.

Without a compelling story ala Rudy Giuliani’s 911 and crime fighting fetes, Newsom will be hard pressed to cash in as a Governor or Senator.

This is no revelation to the Newsom camp. They they know what’s at stake in four years and need your help right now, right here – write him!

You don’t need to be a weatherman to which way the wind blows and Citizens for Halloween are forecasting golden showers, predicting a thunder clash of party revelers and cops with no port-a-potties in sight.

Co-founder and SF Party Party blogger, Ted Strawser, reached out to Castro resident and Port-a-potty guy, Michael Staley, in an effort to dam the urine river before it starts, offering outhouses to neighborhood homeowners.

But, on Tuesday, the Department of Public Works informed him that it would violate city bylaws to issue him a port-a-john.

Instead, The City hopes to stem the tide with a combination of lame PSA Announcements, Aggressive Law Enforcement, and Intimidating Bar Owners.

The No Halloween In the Castro Ads urge partiers to stay home or head somewhere other than the Castro:

“Because this year, the Castro is not where it’s happening”

The City’s Law Enforcement Plan includes:

• Deputy Chief David Shinn says Capt. John Goldberg will head the Mission Station, will receive reports every half hour from command stations throughout the city to deploy police as needed. He Shinn described a “aggressive enforcement” policy for drunkenness, public urination and other likely offenses.

• Shinn and at least half a dozen other officials made pains to note that Muni buses and drivers will be available to ferry “platoons” of cops around town like troop transports.

• Unlike the past, the streets will only be barricaded on an as-needed basis. Also, less of the Castro will be off-limits for parking than in the past.

• Large numbers of Meter Maids and Tow Trucks will be on-scene, to expedite the towing of cars in the no-parking zones, driveways or sidewalks.

• California Highway Patrol officers will be manning DUI checkpoints.

Joe Alioto Veronese, a civil rights attorney, also pointed out that by canceling the official Halloween event and opting not to barricade streets, the city had no legal right to subject random citizens to a weapons check as it did last year.

A number of Castro denizens went on to angrily accuse Supervisor Bevan Dufty, the mayor’s office and the police of attempting to intimidate local businesses into closing on Halloween – as the Weekly noted in its latest print edition.

European in the Castro?

While San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom roundly criticizes the war on drugs of robbing our prisons of precious cell space, Sheriff Michael Hennessey echoes his sentiments quietly freeing violent offenders back onto the streets.

That is, until Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio rides into with some old fashioned justice.

Last week,Hennessey said, “his hands are tied" by overcowding; and I say his early releases are effectively unknotting the mayor’s “services or citation” arrests, locking us into vicious cycle of “catch and release.”

It's like losing an old fashioned shootout by slightest margin of points - heartbreaking. The mayor lights up the scoreboard with huge numbers in his reelection bid; nevertheless, we lose as vegabonds play trading spaces with addicts and theives - not to mention overworked and under appreciated SFPD.

Enter Sheriff Joe, just in time to save the day with a temporary, permanent solution – Tent City.

Sheriff Joe says, If you can’t beat ‘em in Golden Gate Park, then join ‘em!

Pitch a Tent, Portable Fence and Toilets too.

Where the buffalo roam, polo horses play, windmills curn and rose gardens flourish stands a temporary solution to a permanent problem, economically and compassionately providing food, shelter and directing the homeless into programs they desperately need and desperately reject.

Mayor Gavin Newsom launched another operation targeting the drug trafficking in the Tenderloin, Mission and Market Street with a weeklong crackdown in which SFPD arrested over a hundred suspected drug dealers!!!

The latest sting went Monday to Sunday and involved officers posing as drug users seeking heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine.

Captain Tim Hettrich of San Francisco police narcotics detail said the price of drugs on the street is going up.

"That means there is not as much of it, or we are making a dent in making these buys."

Hettrich added nearly three quarters of the dealers were from outside the city and the narcotics unit seized $1.5 million in methamphetamine in the first six months of the year, and the price on the street has gone from $12,000 a pound to $17,000 a pound.

"It's like a farmer's market out there - a pharmaceutical market - it's non-stop. We are out there every day, week in and week out.”

With a price increase, he added, more dealers are coming from out of town and drug-related violence has increased as dealers fight over turf.

From behind the desk in his stately City Hall office, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom looks back on his first term and says the "chattering class" - his term for political insiders - got it all wrong when they thought they had him figured out.

When he was elected in 2003, Newsom was the young, rich entrepreneur who made his political name with a plan to slash welfare checks to the homeless. He was expected to serve the downtown businesses that helped elect him and not disturb the patronage politics of his predecessor and political benefactor, Mayor Willie Brown.

"There was a characterization that was advanced during the campaign that was quite difficult for me, being painted as ... disconnected from the challenges of reality, real people."

Four years later, San Francisco's youngest mayor in a century still contends with the Pacific Heights liberal label, thanks to his society wedding to prosecutor-turned-TV commentator Kimberly Guilfoyle, his posing for fashion magazine photo spreads with her at the Getty mansion before their 2005 divorce, and the playboy-ish pursuits that have followed.

But Newsom has surprised observers by being far more politically progressive than many anticipated, displaying an eagerness to clear the air of cronyism and influence-buying that long hung over the mayor's office and showing a willingness to put his political future in jeopardy by taking a stance on same-sex marriage that, while popular in San Francisco, was eschewed by many, including key Democrats on the national scene.

Newsom is a politician who seems to revel in the world of policy, a technocrat who praises managerial "best practices," who rattles off statistics in almost robotic manner, who seems to announce a new program or initiative every week - from the big, like universal health care, to the small, like visits to schools. But at times his follow-through has fallen flat.

The Associated Press reports about 150 people gathered in the Mission District to build community support for a city-funded safe-injection center, including backing from Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Board of Supervisors.

Heroin and Cocaine aren’t cheap and sort of addicting. Good luck keeping a job to support your habit. Shooting drugs is a real slippery slope:

A) AIDS
B) Homeless
C) Thievery
D) All of the Above.

If you answered “All of the Above,” you were correct.

Why spend taxpayer's money to sit and watch junkies kill themselves, when we can build a jail complete with a rehab center?

The law is supposed to be blind; not us citizen's who trip over these chalk outlines on our way to work. Junkies are just as responsible for upholding the law as the people they rob. Enough of this preferential drug treament, jail them! If mayor’s new “services or citation” sweeps don't net these zombies, then holding, selling illegal should.

Sure, zero will want to participate and few will succeed. Yet, better behind bars, than in front me. The chronic users return to the streets,only long enough to violate their probation and earn longer and longer sentences.

Alive in jail or dead on bail - don't care! In fact, 911 should answer overdose calls with two options: prison time or funeral parlor?

The only good junky is a dead junky. The problem is the addicts living amongst us; and the solution is jail. My 'soul' goal is clean, safe streets for taxpayers and voters who've had it with vagrancy, panhandling, defecating in doorways and other quality-of-life crimes:

But seriously, I agree with Gavin Newsom's assesment of the war on drugs as well as these services from police to facilities to counselors won't be cheap, but the status quo is more costly - maybe, your life? Have you walked the Tenderloin lately... It looks like a third world country and now the City want's us to add a drug den?

I'm not a social worker, but I know how to tie my shoes and wipe ass; and this drug den idea stinks - flush it!

One alternative to overflowing jails is to build a “Tent City” in the Golden Gate Park in which to incarcerate ‘low risk’ inmates with the autority to funnel these addicts and eyesores into mandated programs and out of my face!

Full Jails + Tight Budgets = Early Releases.

Okay, we get it. Gavin’s got no room and no budget to house the homeless (behind bars).

San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey says he's forced to let theives and addicts go free - essentially reversing the Mayor's "services or citation" programs into a "catch and release" revolving door.

Only, Homelessness, Drugs and Homicides aren't going away.

Nor are the Drugs, Prostitution, Panhandling and defication that seed AIDS, Malaria and TB outbreaks associated with the squalar, squatting under bridges, over sidewalks and in our doorways - thereby living amongst us in our living rooms and at our throat.

Just like subsidized flu shots, helping alcoholics, addicts or otherwise helps everyone – most importantly voters!

Not just San Franciscans stand to benefit by helping those who don't want our help. Slightly, this is a national issue central to our City in which Gavin most stands to profit.

Neighsayers, would argue Gavin’s criminalizing the homeless in order to serve big business or ride the pendulum swing of public reaction.

They’re right, but with a caveat...

Firstly, the “Services or Citation” approach is completely appropriate. It takes a badge and a stick, not a carrot to pull this rabbit out of a hat. Nine out of homeless refuse housing and shelter.

Next, it's Gavin's not the Chaplain on M.A.S.H or Mahatma Gandhi. He's a politician running for election - four year's from now! San Francisco 2007 was never a question: rather, he’s running for the next big thing far outside The City limits with a constituency infinitely more conservative... and we all stand to benefit!

Lastly, it behooves San Franciscans to help Gavin, help us by harnessing these quality-of-life arrests to not only make a difference in the perpetrators (them) lives, but to make a difference for the victims (us).

“We want to walk down the street with no danger on our back and no hand out in our face!”

I propose we benevolently house the homeless in a tent city at Golden Gate Park for the duration of their sentences. This way we can minimize cost through centralizing volunteers and professionals to feed, clothe, shelter the homeless and beyond – diagnosing and counseling individuals towards behavioral, drug and educational programs they would otherwise reject.

Homelessness is at epidemic high impacting everyone in any endeavor. You can’t run from it, so stand up and fight... and help our fair mayor get re-elected anyplace, but here.

Truth is I like Newsom. I recognize myself in his mistakes. I think he's reconciling the not so distant past and is finally acting with the urgency and leadership we need. Hopefully, he's making some noise at Federal and State level too.

While the public clamors for safer streets and a crackdown on quality-of-life crimes, San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey is quietly allowing scores of drug users and petty thieves to walk out of jail early so they don't have to sleep on the floor.

The early releases were ordered last week even as all but one wing of a 360-bed County Jail at San Bruno sat empty, the result of budget and staff shortages.

It's just the latest wrinkle in San Francisco's revolving-door justice system, and it helps explain why - despite the public furor - it's so hard to keep petty criminals behind bars.

"If they keep bringing more people in for low-risk crimes, at some point I'm not even going to take them, and that point is coming up pretty darn soon."

The sheriff says he's housing about 2,100 prisoners in a 2,000-bed jail system. For the past few months, an average of 50 to 60 prisoners have slept on the floor, with others stashed in temporary police lockups.

Hennessey says his hands are tied. In fact, he says the jailhouse crunch would have been far worse had he not already shaved as much as 30 days off the sentences of thousands of other low-risk prisoners over the past two years under a parole program that most other jurisdictions rarely invoke.

To help ease crowding, Hennessey has opened one 60-bed wing of the empty County Jail No. 5 in San Bruno - but in the process is burning up his overtime budget. The jail, built in 1989, had been shut since the city opened a state-of-the-art replacement last year for the 550-bed Jail No. 3, a Depression-era hulk that was the subject of prisoner-rights lawsuits.

"You can't continue to crack down on drugs, crack down on the homeless and make more typical drunk-driving and violent-offender arrests without having the jail space to put them in; and you can't keep hiring more cops - who if they're doing their jobs are going to make more arrests - without having the space."

For his part, Mayor Gavin Newsom is "committed to pursuing a variety of options" to address the overcrowding, a spokesman said. Those include home detention monitoring and residential drug treatment.

"It's not just a matter of locking them up," spokesman Nathan Ballard said.

Until the city finds the money and answers, however, Hennessey says he'll keep releasing prisoners early.

San Francisco police officer, Sgt. John Lewis of Park Station, wants to turn back time to get a jump on the homeless.

Lewis is under departmental investigation - and could be suspended - for writing a letter to The Chronicle criticizing the way Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Police Department are handling the homeless problem in Golden Gate Park.

According to police sources, Sgt. John Lewis of Park Station is being investigated for authoring a letter that "undermines the efficiency of the department."

Lewis' letter, published on The Chronicle's editorial page Aug. 15, questioned the Newsom administration's tactic of sending cops and outreach workers into the park before dawn to steer campers into social programs or, if they refused, cite them for quality-of-life crimes.

"Instead of sending a horde of people into the park at 4 a.m., the city should be sending this same horde into the park from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., when the real problems exist."
Lewis, who has 20 years with the department, wrote that the campers were neither interested in programs nor concerned about being cited, and that the real problem was during the day when drug use, drug dealing, drinking and fights were commonplace.

What's the big deal? Instead of citing the fast asleep and drunk, operate at a decent hour and arrest the wide awake and drinking. This way, we'll have more to prosecute!

Police Officers Association President Gary Delagnes said that if charges are filed and upheld, Lewis could face anything from an admonishment to a suspension.

Yet, with 78% Approval Ratings and a roomful of backward Progressives:

Why give a pretender a shot at the title?

At least nine of Gavin’s challengers are serious candidates capable of making strong arguments for why we need a new Mayor. The audience was generally engaged and impressed.
Gavin has little respect for his challengers. He sauntered in 45 minutes late, eating into the time of the only forum he’s agreed to attend.
Gavin only participated on the condition that ABC7 not broadcast the debate, thus depriving a large audience of seeing how he stacks up to the competition.
Gavin refuses to participate in any real, televised debates that gives candidates more than 30 seconds to speak or allows for rebuttals.

Gavin wasn’t the only one taking time out in the corner. The Chronicle's Smoking Hot Cecilia M. Vega got a ‘D’ for continually walking Mecke and other Revenge of the Nerds candidates off the page to the back of the Delta House.

Though she described Gavin as tardy and superficial – Ouch! Hearsay has it, Cecilia's pulling her punches (and breaking my heart) as the rumor mill spins:

"The striking reporter is romantically linked with the handsom mayor."

While gossipers are gullible, this blogger remains uncompromised (by the facts). Let me assure you, I have the utmost integrity and given the opportunity to get up close and personal, I promise to keep a professional distance - that'll be $50.00 Gav!

Bay Area Reporter (BAR) is San Francisco's oldest and largest local newspaper of record serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities endorsed incumbent Gavin Newsom, crediting the mayor for changing the national debate for LGBT rights and equality.
Bay Area Reporter writes:

More than 2,000 homeless in San Francisco have been housed since Newsom's "Care Not Cash" measure took effect, a success acknowledged in a recent television news broadcast interviewing previously homeless people who have benefited from the program. We acknowledge and support the mayor's other key initiatives on transportation, infrastructure, public safety, sustainability and housing, particularly housing for people with AIDS.

We Gavin Newsom because we believe he has done his best to make San Francisco a better place to live.

When the mayor stopped by our office Monday, he said that he believes the city is moving in the right direction, with great or modest progress in many areas, including the city's push to offer universal health care to its uninsured residents and Muni. Crime, particularly the city's homicide rate, remains a great concern, he said, and he acknowledged that he's "taking a lot of heat" over the city's decision to cancel Halloween in the Castro, even as law enforcement prepares for a unprecedented presence in the gay neighborhood this year in case people don't heed the city's "Home for Halloween" message that should soon blanket local airwaves.

Being mayor of a large city as diverse as San Francisco is not an easy job. Newsom is the first to admit that there is much still to do, but we have confidence in his vision and faith in his abilities to lead San Francisco for the next four years.

We endorse Gavin Newsom for mayor.

Liberals March 'Right' Over Progressives.

CW Nevius writes San Francisco - the liberal, left-coast city conservatives love to mock - could be undergoing a transformation when it comes to homeless people. Although the city would still be a poor choice for a pep rally for the war in Iraq, indications are that residents have had it with aggressive panhandlers, street squatters and drug users.

Consider the case of David Kiely, who has lived in the South of Market area for 18 years. He bought a home when prices were low and now lives there with his wife, Jenny, and their three boys, ages 7, 4 and 1. Kiely insists "we're not some white, yuppie parents saying we can't take this." In fact, he says, they donate to programs for homeless people at Glide Memorial Methodist Church and the food bank at St. Anthony Dining Room. But he's finally saying "enough is enough."
"I don't expect it to be Cow Hollow or Pacific Heights, but the other day Jenny is bringing the kids back from the park, and some guy is standing on the corner throwing up on himself."
"Maybe there has been an epiphany," says David Latterman, president of Fall Line Analytics, a local market research firm.

"People have realized they can hate George Bush but still not want people crapping in their doorway."

Trent Rhorer, executive director of San Francisco's Human Services Agency, is at ground zero for homelessness concerns. He's heard it from local residents at meetings, he's read the polls, and he noted the huge response to Chronicle columns about the homeless people and intravenous drug users in Golden Gate park. Like others, he thinks there's been a change in the way San Franciscans think the homelessness problem should be approached.

"I don't think this is a conservative or liberal thing. This is quality of life for everyone. What research has shown and what we have seen from visits to cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Portland and New York is that you need to combine good social outreach with law enforcement."

That means something more than an offer of help, which often is declined anyhow. (One city official estimated that nine out of 10 say they are not interested in a shelter or housing when approached.)

"Maybe, you just need a guy with a badge standing over them and saying, you can't stay there any more."

That's tough talk for a city that's been known as a friendly place for those down on their luck. And in previous years it would have been a political non-starter. When Mayor Frank Jordan tried to push homeless people off the street with his "Matrix" program, the crackdown got much of the blame for his failure to win a second term.

But this has the feel of a new day in San Francisco, says David Binder, a statistical analyst and founder of David Binder Research.

"Homelessness, and quality of life issues, are dividing the liberals and the progressives in this city. The liberals will say we've got to get tough on the homeless and the progressives are more old-line liberal."

How that debate will come out is anyone's guess, but it is hard to disagree with Latterman's blunt assessment, which is:

"People are just pissed. For the first time, even the left is saying they've had enough."

In an informal poll by SFGate.com, 90 percent of respondents said Mayor Gavin Newsom's crackdown South of Market was a great idea.

... And Mayor Gavin Newsom taps Former 49ers President Carmen Policy to lead the city's effort to keep the 49ers from exiting for the South Bay - bringing the veteran football executive's long journey to build a stadium in San Francisco full circle.

Policy headed the $100 million bond measure drive in 1997 that would have helped pay for a stadium at Candlestick Point. The voters approved it, but the stadium never got built.

"I consider it unfinished business."

Newsom says Carmen will serve as San Francisco's go-between with the Niners and the National Football League. He will also help lead a referendum headed for the ballot next June to allow construction of a stadium at Hunters Point, along with a housing and retail development at neighboring Candlestick Point.

"I'm absolutely thrilled Carmen will be joining our team. His track record speaks for itself."

While Policy will be reporting to the mayor's office, Lennar Corp. - which is behind the stadium and Candlestick developments - will be footing the bill for his work as well as for the ballot referendum.

Newsom Welcomes U.S. Navy

Mayor Gavin Newsom welcomed the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels today to kick start the city's 26th annual Fleet Week.

Air demonstrations will take place Saturday and Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. and Navy pilots will be joined by the U.S. F-16 Viper West and Patriot jet demonstration teams, the U.S. Air Force's F-22A Raptor A-10 and the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter.

As part of Friday's show, Airbus will fly their new A380 over the waterfront crowds to demonstrate the latest development in high capacity, long-range aircraft.

San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly, who attempted to pass a resolution blocking the Blue Angels air show from participating in Fleet Week will not be among the swarm of people at the wharf to view the aerial acrobatics.

Good. Lumpy can stay home and knit pink booties.

Newsom opposed the Daly resolution, citing the city's longstanding history as a "Navy town."

Naval ships will dot San Francisco piers during Fleet Week and will be open to the public for free tours from Sunday through Tuesday, according to the Fleetweek.us

War On Drugs

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had some tough words for the people and party of the people today - declaring war on the war on drugs.

Newsom asserts local jails are overcrowded with people incarcerated for drug offenses, taking up room that could be used to hold more violent criminal offenders. He says violent criminals with lengthy felony records are being turned loose, too often.

"If you want to get serious, if you want to reduce crime by 70% in this country overnight, end this war on drugs, you want to get serious, seriously serious about crime and violence end this war on drugs."

San Francisco Sheriff Mike Hennessey agrees estimating 75% of crime is drug related.

But Seriously, Chris Daly, disagrees continues to criticize his way out of a job. For the record, he also disagreed with:

The Mayor’s Office is really turning SOMA and GNS around. If homeless programs like the downtown outreach plan continue, we’ll cease to exist. How’s the name Gav4Gov.com?

Mayor Gavin Newsom’s plan consists of three separate teams of police officers and social service staff working in a 15-block area, from Third Street to Fifth Street and Market to Harrison streets, according to a Sept. 28 memo from Mayor Gavin Newsom’s deputy chief of staff, Julian Potter, to Newsom’s chief of staff, Phil Ginsburg.

The memo states:

“Any person committing a crime (littering, encampment, trespassing, urinating, defecating, dumping, blocking sidewalk, intoxication, etc.) will be asked to cease the behavior and enter into services. If the individual resists services, the officer will issue a citation. If the arrest is related to a misdemeanor, warrant, intoxication, or a second citation for the same period, the individual will be taken into custody for processing.”

Newsom’s spokesman, Nathan Ballard, adds:

“This is exactly what we’ve been doing in Golden Gate Park and it’s been
working.”

Predictably, Chris Daly has to stand up for the downtrodden constituency of addicts, alcoholics and prostitutes. He wants to waste our time and money with a hearing on the effort before a Board of Supervisors committee.

“San Franciscans have time and time again rejected that approach. We’ll see what happens this time.”

The targeted area includes the Moscone Center, home to The City’s convention industry. San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau spokeswoman Angela Jackson said homelessness “is a problem in San Francisco and I’m glad to hear that they will be addressing the Moscone area.”

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom met briefly with embattled supervisor Ed Jew yesterday.

Jew is accused of attempting to extort $80,000 from a group of fast-food business owners. He pleaded not guilty in court on Friday.

The rookie supervisor, who was charged Thursday with one federal count of mail fraud, appeared briefly in U.S. District Court, and then was released on $1 million bond. The charge came after an FBI sting where prosecutors say the operators of a group of tapioca drink shops gave Jew $40,000 in cash and said they would paid him another $40,000 later.

"Enough is enough," Newsom told reporters this morning after the mayor spoke at the opening of the Moon Festival Street Fair in Chinatown, a short walk from Jew's flower shop.

"He needs to do the right thing and step aside."

Jew, 47, has acknowledged taking the money but said he did so at the businessmen's insistence and on behalf of a consultant he recommended they hire to help with their permit problem.

Jew's attorney Steven Gruel said the federal government's case was weak, calling the mail fraud charge a “throwaway charge because you can't get something else” and questioning what kind of influence Jew could have had over the issuing of city permits. He doesn't control the planning commission and he certainly doesn't control what types of permits are necessary for retailers.

Earlier in the day, Jew's attorneys had said they would not allow their client to meet with Newsom if they were not present. Nonetheless, Jew and Newsom sat down alone yesterday, for about 15 minutes.

Newsom said he's considered television since his marriage to Court TV Queen Kimberly Guilfoyle and throughout courtships with Reality TV Stars Erin Brodie and Paris Hilton as well as CSI's Sofia Milos. This one simply fit.

Newsom insists that his television aspirations are independent of any open government reality television projects concepts proposed by rival mayoral candidate and video blogger, Josh Wolf, who if elected promises 24/7 Reality Government.

My life has always been an open book. Reality TV affords us a new medium with a new chapter. In a nutshell, it’s kind of like The Apprentice meets The Crocodile Hunter meets Real World meets The Bachelor without the all the Harry Potter.

Mayor Bans Shopping Carts

San Francisco may be on the verge of becoming the first city in the country to ban shopping carts because they assist the homeless and hinders quality-of-life outreach programs.

Some experts say the carts are one of the biggest obstacles to outreach programs in the city.

By making sidewalks less profitable and less hospitable, Mayor Gavin Newsom wants to hopes to usher more homeless off the streets and into shelters like Glide Memorial Church banishing shopping carts, baby carriages and cardboard boxes from the city once and for all.

What it takes in retrieving, and the cost to replace these carts, begs the larger question: what are we going to do about the homeless and the economic and health adverse effects on our community?

Newsom's proposal calls on grocers to use an assigned number of carts indoors only and with full-service valet from check stand to curbside. Merchants would be subject to unannounced city audits and fined for each cart under their quota or recovered off property.

But the proposal is vigorously opposed by the grocery industry. Peter Larkin, president of the California Grocers Association, says his member stores already have an active security program.

"In our opinion, it will frustrate our efforts to continue to reduce, re-use and recycle carry-out bags," Larkin said. "Second, it will raise the cost of doing business for us, which will translate into increased costs for the consumers.

What is not in dispute is the potential domino effect if San Francisco bans grocery carts. Larkin says he expects a potential ban here would significantly hurt the recycling industry. Shopping carts have already been outlawed in South Africa, London and Ireland.

In a continuing effort to combat urban blight and homeless encampments, Mayor Gavin Newsom approved legislation to purchase 2500 Floridian Alligators to be released by the Public Utilities Commission and 1000 Komodo Dragons (the world’s heaviest lizards at 10 feet, 200 Lbs.) for the Recreation & Park Commission.

The mayor credits trips to Manila, Osaka, Davos and even NYC for stimulating a ‘Mayoral Renaissance’ in which we hope to bring home the ‘Best-of-the-Best’ to make our City even better.

The Komodo’s prodigious appetite will take a bite out of crime!

Newsom says a 90 lb dragon can eat a 100 lb crack addict or tagger in less than 20 minutes. With that kind of production, the dragons should eat through our 1500 homeless in record time!

As with the Mexican Fan Palms introduced to the Mission’s aesthetic nearly a year ago, Newsom says he chose the Komodo Dragons with Japantown’s rich cultural heritage in mind as dragons evoke a ‘Survival of the Fittest’ solution to controlling our growing homeless population - long inhabiting parks, sidewalks, living under overpasses and amongst the our famed buildings within the Civic Center and Tenderloin neighborhoods.

Newsom added, these Carnivores are exactly the kind of Dark Ages ‘Out-of-the-Box’ thinking, tailor-made for a Green, Progressive City like San Francisco and the sister-cities across the bay who have already turned to sheep as a low cost alternative to lawn mowers.

Like maggots treating gangrene, these nocturnal bottom-feeders were bred to feed on the very downtrodden, social decay that has long eaten away our City's taxes, tourism for years leaving us to grapple with AIDS, TB and Malaria outbreaks.

Manhattan, albeit by accident, was the first to turn to reptiles for homeless control. It was once a fad among New Yorkers vacationing in Florida to bring back baby alligators for their children to raise as pets. The infant gators would outlive their cuteness, sad to say, at which point their desperate owners would flush them down the toilet.

Some of the gators survived the dank sewer system and bred, producing scattered colonies of full-grown alligators. Mayor Rudy Giuliani attributed pockets of declining crime rates throughout the city to the alligators. He lauched Gator Aid purchasing 2500 alligators and strategically releasing them within the sewer lines and parks.

Their descendants live down there to this day. According to some reports the animals are blind and afflicted with albinism and have grown to enormous size.

Heads Will Roll

Heads are rolling at City Hall. Mayor Newsom asked for resignation letters from his senior staff, city department heads, and those that he had ‘anointed’ to serve on a city commission or board.

According to the Chronicle, Newsom will deal with "a few officials he has battled with since taking office in 2004" and with the resignations "on a case-by-case basis."

SFPartyParty speculates, “Gavin ain’t firing no minorities, even if they are important scapegoats,” so Police Chief Heather Fong will keep her job even though homicides are at a ten year high.

With no serious opponent this November, BeyondChron suggests Newsom is having trouble raising money – and the threat of losing your job may be an incentive for city commissioners and department heads to contribute. Fear is what will keep these subjects loyal, and sending $500 to the Newsom re-election campaign would make the boss very happy. It’s a deeply cynical move, but it explains why the Mayor would suddenly ask everyone to “tender their resignation" two months before the election.

Newly Reelected and Ready to Service

Scores of postcards showing a tieless San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom eyeing a woman's low-cut dress under the headline, "Fresh out of rehab ... newly single and ready to service," have been mailed out over the past couple weeks.

Nothing on the cards identifies who is sending them. Judging from those who have reported being on the receiving end, they are aimed at an audience of Democratic women.

The cards list the Web addresses of two anti-Newsom sites devoted to spoofing the mayor's personal and political troubles, Gavin Sucks.com and GavinWatch.com.

We couldn't reach the folks behind the sites to find out if they had any involvement, but the mayor's folks don't think so, speculating it was "a Newsom hater" with money.

GavinWatch.com:

For those of you were are just learning about GavinWatch from Sunday’s Matier and Ross story, welcome! We’d like to thank M&R for the bump in traffic, but for the record we were not involved in the Fresh Out of Rehab postcards.

For those of you disinclined to take our word for it, consider these arguments:

Money: We simply don’t have a lot of it.
Messaging: That postcard just isn’t our style.
Quality of Design: Finally, we wouldn’t spend our hard-earned money on such a poorly designed postcard [See GavinWatch Postcards].

If we were to go to the trouble and expense of mailing a postcard we would focus on issues like Gavin’s questionable record on crime prevention or his refusal to answer questions or his lying to the public.

Frankly, there’s no one else to turn and we’re hopeful that Gavin’s 'poor decisions' don't hurt his chances to land a bigger office far outside the City limits with a constituency far more conservative.

We hope Gavin’s political ambitions will motivate him to take action today on past promises - thusfar undelivered.

Gavin's rockstar 78% approval ratings are rivaled only by homelessness and homicides. Anytown, Anywhere, and the Good Mayor would be Nowhere. It's now or never. Gavin's next campaign begins with the Streets of San Francisco!

It's a Too Chicken Race. May the Burning Man win! With nothing but static to the Left of the radio dial, I was hoping Tony Hall would stick around awhile to champion our "Soul" Goal: Clean, Safe Streets.

Yet, Dan Noyes of ABC 7 I Team interviewed former San Francisco Supervisor Tony Hall to learn he is pulling out of the race: “The support just isn’t there.” Hall says many of the big donors who would be his supporters are afraid of coming out against Newsom, with such a huge lead in the polls.

“Maybe what’s better for the city is another dose of this cat and their spin machine.”

Hall was widely considered to be the most serious opposition to Mayor Gavin Newsom’s re-election. He announced his candidacy just three months ago.

Now that Hall turned Over Easy, Chicken John Rinaldi remains the lone challenger to the incumbent Mayor McChicken. Let's see, if the Showman can give Gavin a run for the money. On the sunny side, two chickens running beats two runny eggs any day!
